Japanese Tsumami Zaiku Workshop – 2 Hours Tsumami zaiku is a traditional Japanese craft where small, square pieces of fabric are pinched and folded using tweezers/fingers to create intricate designs, most commonly resembling flowers, and is often used to make hair accessories like kanzashi. The term translates to “pinching handiwork” as “tsumami” means “to pinch” and “zaiku(saiku)” means “detailed work”.
Origin: Developed during the Edo period in Japan.
Technique: Fabric squares are folded and glued together to create different shapes, often using tweezers or fingers.
Common materials: Chirimen, a type of Japanese silk crepe, is used traditionally. Nowadays, any type of fabric is used.
Applications: Primarily used for hair accessories like kanzashi, but can also be used for jewellery, decorations, and other items.

Whether you’re completely new to stitching or just curious, this beginner-friendly workshop offers a gentle and inspiring introduction to the world of Sashiko. No advanced skills or special tools required—just a desire to slow down, stitch mindfully, and enjoy the process. We’re thrilled to welcome back our guest instructor Yoshiko Ito, who previously led the popular Japanese Tsumami Zaiku workshop. Yoshiko Ito, Bachelor of Fine Arts, is a Sydney-based visual artist from Japan known for her ability to blend traditional Japanese crafts with modern techniques, creating uniquely beautiful and culturally rich works of art.
